Laytown Races, Co. Meath
Laytown Strand Races have been run since the 1870s. It is said to be the only officially recognised strand race meeting in Europe, and possibly the world. The one day race meeting traditionally took place in August. It attracted thousands of race goers and families from Meath and the surrounding counties. It had a carnival atmosphere with entertainment for all the family. This coupled with good racing for the real punter.
However following accidents at the race meeting in August in 1994, where a number of horses were killed and jockey's injured, concerns were raised as to the future of the races.
Safety measures were introduced to ensure the wellbeing of horses, jockeys and races goers. The race meeting date was moved from August to June, and then to September.
The annual Laytown Strand races continue to take place in early September of each year.
