\r\nThe question startles me. ‘Yes, I am Jewish.’
\r\n‘Wie alt bist du?’ How old are you?
\r\n‘I am thirteen.’
\r\n‘You are tall for your age. Is this your mother?’ He touches Mummy lightly on the shoulder: ‘You go with your mother.’ With his riding stick he parts aunt Szeren Neni from my mother’s embrace and gently shoves Mummy and me to the group moving to the right.
